BiBa Founder Barbara Hulanicki returns to Brighton

Pictured above: Bibi Founder Barbara Hulanicki

29 October 2009 — Beyond Biba documentary screening
Barbara Hulanicki
, founder of the iconic clothes store Biba, is returning to the city where she learned her craft, for a screening of a new documentary about her life.

Barbara, 72, studied illustration at what was Brighton College of Art, now part of the University of Brighton, in the early 1950s.

The documentary entitled Beyond Biba will be shown at the university’s Sallis Benney Theatre at the Grand Parade site at 6pm on the 29th of October and will be followed by a question-and-answers session with Barbara herself.

The film, produced by November Films, tells the story of the Warsaw-born fashion designer, including details on her early life, the time she enjoyed in Brighton and also how she started Biba with her husband Stephen Fitz-Simon — a business partnership that helped change Britain’s fashion in the 1960s and 1970s.

In the nineties, she arrived in Miami Beach where she designed interiors for Ron Wood of the Rolling Stones and Chris Blackwell’s Boutique Hotel Group. She is credited with the resurrection of Miami Beach’s crumbling Art Deco district.

As well as her interior design work, she has also delved back into the fashion world, designing for Coccinelle, Habitat, Graham and Brown and recently a clothing range for Topshop.

Museum à la mode: capital’s young designers showcase at Museum of London

17 - 19 September 2009 — Museum à la mode: capital’s young designers showcase at Museum of London
Museum of London is once again the venue for one of London’s most creative design events during London Fashion Week. Fashion Diversity is a three-day extravaganza of free workshops and catwalk shows featuring new and established designers and models organised and produced by Mahogany Model Management and Untold Design CIC.

Over the past six months students from across London have worked with Museum of London curators and their collections on a project brief to create a fashion range influenced by the 18th century pleasure gardens. On Saturday 19 September, their new work will be showcased at the Museum. The final show will see one young designer selected by a panel of judges to receive a cash prize from sponsors Little Hands Design.

“Fashion Diversity offers an invaluable opportunity for young fashion designers, to showcase creative designs to the competitive fashion industry as well as bringing new talent and inspiration to an established market. The fact that we can showcase during London Fashion Week at Museum of London illustrates the impact we hope to achieve with our work in the fashion world.” Young designer Tarell McIntosh says.

Beatrice Behlen, Senior Curator, Fashion and Decorative Arts at Museum of London, says: “Once again we are the proud hosts of these exciting events and have been working in partnership with the students for the past six months. Museum of London has an extensive fashion and decorative arts collections that is relatively unknown – something we hope events such as this can help change.”

A series of free workshops and catwalk shows will run from Thursday 17 September to Saturday 19 September at Museum of London.

To book a place please E-mail: workshops@fashiondiversity.com or go to www.museumoflondon.org.uk for further information.

Gareth Pugh TO PRESENT FILM with M·A·C & MILK

Gareth Pugh TO PRESENT FILM COURTESY OF M·A·C & MILK

13 September 2009 — Gareth Pugh TO PRESENT FILM with M·A·C & MILK
Gareth Pugh has collaborated with cosmetic giant M·A·C to present his new film — directed by Ruth Hogben — at Milk, (located in the Meatpacking District of New York), this Sunday the 13th of September.

Fashion Week guests will attend a private viewing between 8 - 10pm at Milk Studios on 450 West 15th Street, after which, from 10pm until midnight, it will be opened up to the public including design school students, at 449 W 14th Street. These guests will be activated through M·A·C's facebook page to which anyone can join. Fans will then be sent event details by 10 September latest.

"When M·A·C invited me to be part of their New York Fashion Week plans, I thought it was the perfect opportunity for me to make a new fashion film... It will hopefully set the mood for my catwalk show which will take place as usual in Paris. It will represent the essence of what the show this season is about, although it couldn't be further from a trailer, it's more of an abstract insight. I am very honoured to be able to come to New York and be a part of fashion week and would like to extend my thanks and gratitude to all the people who have made this project possible." Gareth Pugh

“The M·A·C and Milk partnership is an evolution, a truly integrated collaboration between fashion and makeup artistry,” says John Demsey, Group President, Estée Lauder Companies. “We have supported Gareth for many seasons and when the M·A·C & Milk partnership started coming to life we knew that he had to be involved. Gareth has created a conceptual film in support of M·A·C & Milk, which will be launched on September 13th. This film presentation is exactly the kind of work we hoped the M·A·C & Milk initiative would inspire. And, since he has never participated in New York Fashion Week, it makes it all the more exciting.”

Gareth Pugh and the film's director Ruth Hogben, will be attending the event, as well as his closest creative collaborators.

With so many designers participating at M·A·C & Milk this season, including Alexander Wang and Proenza Schouler, Milk Studios Founder Mazdack Rassi says: "It’s not just an alternative show space we are creating, but truly a movement.”

Gareth Pugh will be holding his Spring/Summer 2010 catwalk show in Paris, 19:00, Wednesday 30 September at Palais de Tokyo.

17 October 2009 – 7 February 2010

PEM PRESENTS
Rare Bird of Fashion:
The Irreverent Iris Apfel

  17 October 2009 – 7 February 2010 — PEM PRESENTS
Rare Bird of Fashion: The Irreverent Iris Apfel

Think you have nothing to wear? Think again!

Any woman who has ever worn a pair of jeans has Iris Apfel to thank.

In the 1940s, when only lumberjacks and field hands wore blue cotton denim, a persistent young girl hounded the owner of a Wisconsin Army & Navy store until he finally ordered her a pair of boy-sized denims.

Her intent: to wear them with a turban and large hoop earrings.

Such was an early milestone in the career of a fashion visionary and muse who quite possibly launched a trend in women’s fashion — jeans — that now represents a 10 billion dollar industry yearly in the U.S. alone.

And that was just the beginning. Inspired by the music of Duke Ellington, Billie Holiday and other jazz musicians, Iris Apfel was already synthesizing high and low, classical and ethnic elements in her manner of dress and aesthetic outlook. The result is a life and career of remarkable creativity and verve proving that it’s not only what you wear, but how you wear it.

Rare Bird of Fashion: The Irreverent Iris Apfel will be on view at the Peabody Essex Museum from the 17th of October 2009 through to the 7th of February 2010 featuring more than 80 dramatic ensembles from the personal collection of legendary tastemaker and style icon Iris Apfel. Known for her eclectic permutations of designer clothing and exotic baubles, Apfel has inspired bold developments in the clothing and design industries through her spirited irreverence and pitch-perfect taste.

Now in her 86th year, she continues to challenge visual culture with radical juxtapositions of far-flung influences. These spectacular and unexpected wardrobe combinations are exhibited with inventive staging and playful displays that underscore Apfel’s inexhaustible creative spirit.

“Not only does Iris Apfel possess a finely-tuned sense of personal taste, but her ability to combine diverse fashions — from haute couture to flea market finds, street style to tribal dress — is astonishing and endlessly inventive. Her use of fashion as an artistic medium is revealed in her sophisticated handling of color, line, pattern, texture, and ornament,” said Paula Richter, Curator for Exhibitions and Research at the Peabody Essex Museum.

With a personal style the New York Times described as “controlled flamboyance,” this fashion maven, New York society figure, and co-founder of the legendary textile design company, Old World Weavers, has counted among her friends and clients the legends of international art, culture, and fashion. For decades she has traveled the world, building her business and inspiring fashion designers such as Ralph Rucci, Jason Wu and Isaac Mizrahi (slated to join Ms. Apfel in conversation at PEM — see Exhibition Events below). All the while she has scoured souks and boutiques worldwide as a connoisseur of all things wearable and wonderful. She recently appeared at the top of Vanity Fair’s international best-dressed list and is featured in print advertising for Coach. On the street, Iris Apfel is easily recognizable for her out-sized spectacles and head-turning accessories.

Iris Apfel is part interior designer and part performance artist. She can deftly change a room by appointing a space with objects and textiles, as well as by simply appearing in an outfit with its own stylistic center of gravity. Anyone who has ever given an especially elegant drapery pull a long look when accessorizing an evening dress would find a kindred spirit in Iris Apfel.

While few are as fearless as Apfel in assembling daily attire, all can find inspiration to take risks and regard apparel and the wide world of accessories as a means of creative self-expression and a source of joy. Couture and flea market finds, haute and — not — all have their place in the imagination and closets of the divine Iris Apfel.

13 September 2009 — Gareth Pugh TO PRESENT FILM with M·A·C & MILK
Gareth Pugh has collaborated with cosmetic giant M·A·C to present his new film — directed by Ruth Hogben — at Milk, (located in the Meatpacking District of New York), this Sunday the 13th of September.

Sylvia Ji's Nectar

  3 - 20 September 2009 — Sylvia Ji's Nectar
StolenSpace is to present Nectar, the premier UK solo show from Californian artist Sylvia Ji.

Sylvia Ji is a master of capturing the dark side of the beautiful and the sublime. Macabre Day Of The Dead catrinas intermingle with exotic empresses, with a regal elegance. Ji’s imagery is a visual elixir of life and death, combining sacred symbolism with mystical glamour and opulence. Influenced by historical costumery, Ji incorporates Baroque detailing such as luxurious tapestries, ornamental feathers, and gold leafing into her work for a more elaborate and decorative effect.

Ji’s work encapsulates an alluring beauty that is both cutting edge and a nod to time-honored technique. Her paintings are symbolic reflections of herself, portraits of people she knows or nameless faces set in a landscape of fleeting and decaying beauty. Possessing an artistic voice as unique as the times we live in, Ji is at once contemplative, spiritual, enigmatic, and yet whimsically funny. Above all else, it is perhaps beauty that emerges as her defining characteristic, and her art reflects this: an extension of herself; a passionate appreciation of simple aesthetic pleasure fused with intimately complex subject matter.

Londoners Through a Lens

  14 August - 5 September 2009 — Londoners Through A Lens
Following the success of London Through a Lens last year, The Getty Images Gallery, in London, is set to open a new exhibition on Friday 14th August, focusing on the people of London, from the film stars to the flower sellers.

Londoners Through a Lens takes another look at the capital, but this time with the emphasis on its inhabitants, from the famous figures to the everyday people. Time Out Guides will once again be publishing a Londoners Through a Lens book to accompany the exhibition, which will go on sale 3rd September 2009.

The exhibition features a wide-ranging and multifaceted selection of photos from the past century, including a selection of rare images. All of the images in the collection were chosen from the Getty Images Hulton Archive and range from 1900-1990. These stirring shots capture the spirit, personality and ever-evolving style of London's residents over the course of 90 years.

"As one of London's leading photo galleries it is only fitting that we are hosting this show, which is a stunning sequel to London Through a Lens and a perfect tribute to the people of London," says Getty Images Gallery Director, Louise Garczewska. "The spirit, energy and excitement of our capital is embodied in every one of its charming inhabitants, from Michael Caine to Thomas Sparrow, the bird taxidermist from Eltham. These images really portray what it means to be a Londoner."

London has produced its fair share of heroes and villains, many of which are included in the exhibition. But the exhibition is not a celebrity identity parade; it also captures the anonymous Londoners, the people that haven't appeared in the spotlight, but have helped shaped the metropolis of today. An image of the Sex Pistols outside Buckingham Palace appears alongside an image of school children queuing outside a children's only cinema. A rat catcher with two ferrets and his faithful Jack Russell appears alongside the swinging sixties fashion designer Mary Quant.

Since then he has produced hat collections twice a year under his label Stephen Jones Millinery, while also collaborating with some of the most prominent fashion houses and designers of our time, including Jean Paul Gaultier, Vivienne Westwood, Thierry Mugler, Christian Dior, John Galliano, Comme des Garçons and Marc Jacobs.

Stephen Jones says, “Ever since I spent a fun-filled weekend at St Germans years ago, I have been trapped by its magic. In a credit crunch world, the house and its grounds offer a sense of timelessness, beauty and charm that transcends the practical and spins into the metaphysical. I and my team will be making merry millinery on the whim of the moment, seeking to capture the effervescence of the beautiful people either mirroring their souls or veiling the truth!”

Festival Founder Catherine St Germans says, “I am really excited that Stephen is coming to join in the party at Port Eliot Festival and will be working with Barbara and Luella in their tent to create one off spontaneous pieces. Stephen and I have been talking about what he is going to do, and it is going to be incredible. He is bringing materials from his workroom and fellow designers from the Dior studio in Paris will also be here, and will be helping him create his magic. It is incredible that you will be able to come to our festival and see these designers all in action. Our fashion line up at the festival this year is a dream come true for me!”

This years Port Eliot Festival promises an eclectic line-up of live music, DJs, literary stars, cabaret acts, theatre, fashion, dance and other performers; set to fire up this summer’s best garden party.

Gilbert & George White Cube

Jack Freak Pictures

  10 July - 22 August 2009 — Gilbert & George White Cube
White Cube will present a new exhibition by Gilbert & George. entitled JACK FREAK PICTURES. The exhibition, shown in both the Mason's Yard and Hoxton galleries, comprises of the single largest series of work ever made by the illustrious British duo. It is their third show with White Cube and the first in London since the monumental retrospective at Tate Modern in 2007.

According to the writer Michael Bracewell, "the JACK FREAK PICTURES are among the most iconic, philosophically astute and visually violent works that Gilbert & George have ever created." The dominant pictorial element is the Union Jack, itself an internationally familiar, abstract, geometric pattern and a socially and politically charged symbol whose significance spans the cultural spectrum from contemporary fashion to aggressive national pride. Equally prominent, and linking the JACK FREAK PICTURES to almost every work previously created by the artists, are Gilbert & George themselves in a variety of guises: dancing, gurning, howling, watching, waiting. Sometimes their bodies seem complete; other times they have been fragmented or contorted. Invariably they feature as both subject and object, artwork and artist; they are players in the epic and complex pictorial drama they have created.

Set in the East End of London where Gilbert & George have lived and worked for more than forty years, the JACK FREAK PICTURES bring numerous aspects of the modern world to life. Medals, flags, maps, street-signs, graffiti and other less immediately obvious motifs jostle for attention with the brickwork, buildings and even foliage of the contemporary urban environment in works that are densely layered and complexly nuanced to evoke (and sometimes conflate) a sense of past, present and future. They raise fundamental and rudimentary questions about religion, identity, politics, economics, sexuality and death. The JACK FREAK PICTURES reaffirm Gilbert & George's status as pre-eminent Modernists and underline Robert Rosenblum's observation that "of the singularity of their duality in life as art, there is little doubt". Michael Bracewell's view that they are "visionary artists in the lineage of William Blake" rings truer now than ever before.

Gilbert was born in the Dolomites, Italy in 1943; George was born in Devon in 1942 and both live and work in London. Together they have participated in many important group and solo exhibitions including the largest retrospective of any artist to be staged at Tate Modern (2007). The exhibition went on to tour Haus der Kunst, Munich (2007); Castello di Rivioli, Turin (2007); Milwaukee Art Museum (2008) and Brooklyn Museum (2008 -09). They have had many other extensive solo exhibitions, including, Whitechapel Art Gallery, London (1971-1972), National Gallery, Beijing (1993), Shanghai Art Museum (1993), Stedelijk Museum, Amsterdam (1995-1996), Musée d'Art Moderne de la Ville de Paris (1998), Serpentine Gallery, London (2002), Kunsthaus Bregenz (2002) and Kestnergesellschaft, Hannover (2004-2005). They won the Turner Prize in 1984 and represented Britain at the Venice Biennale in 2005.

A fully illustrated catalogue, with an essay by Michael Bracewell, will be published to accompany the exhibition.

KISMET, BY BITA FAYYAZI,
INSTALLED AT FABRICA
KISMET, BY BITA FAYYAZI, INSTALLED AT FABRICA
The force of destiny, the inescapable forger of the future; this is the theme of Iranian artist Bita Fayyazi’s Kismet installation which Luciano Benetton has purchased.

It will be permanently displayed at Fabrica, Benetton Group’s communication research centre.

Bita Fayyazi herself presented the installation to Luciano Benetton.

Kismet (the word means “fate” in Persian) is a group of golden, suspended new-born babies which, as Bita Fayyazi says, “dissociate from the reality in which they find themselves. Loosing their apparent form and solidity, spinning cocoons, contemplating their world as an impregnable castle. They realize their destiny. Because destiny reserves a day for all of us, each and every one."

Formerly shown at the 51st International Biennale of Venice in 2005, the work is now at Fabrica in the corridor between the neo-Palladian villa and Tadao Ando’s new building: a symbolic passage between the old and the new, past and future. Between the Western world and Oriental culture, which the Benetton Group — and its President in particular — has always observed with great interest.
